Fountain Valley Rotary Club Honors Area Teachers of the Year

14 Teachers in the Fountain Valley School District Honored as Teachers Of The Year (2010-11)

The Fountain Valley Rotary Club held its annual Teacher Recognition Breakfast at the Offices of the Fountain Valley School District on Tuesday, May 10^th. Fourteen teachers from the area’s elementary schools, middle schools and high schools were honored as Teachers of the Year for the 2010-2011 school year. Many dignitaries were in attendance including members of the Fountain Valley City Council, the Fountain Valley School District Board and the Huntington Beach Union High School and Garden Grove Unified School Districts.

After a welcome from Donna Frank, president of the Fountain Valley Rotary Club, and opening remarks from Marc Ecker, Superintendent of the Fountain Valley School District and a member of the FVRC, the fourteen honorees were introduced. Principals of each of the participating schools introduced each Teacher of the Year from his/her school and commented on the reasons why that teacher was deserving of the honor. Each teacher so honored was then presented with a plaque.

The teachers honored and their schools are: Patti Ostovarpour (Courreges Elementary School), Laurie Frandsen (Cox E.S.), Annalise Winkle (Fountain Valley High School), Evelyn Lee (Fulton Middle School), Christine Conkle (Gisler E.S.), Roger Takahashi (Los Amigos H.S.), Amy Nevin (Masuda M.S.), Michael Waldinger (Moiola School), Lara Epling (Newland E.S.), Mary Jimenez (Oka E.S.), Andrea Benson (Plavan E.S.), Loren Howard (Talbert M.S.), Martha Anderson (Tamura E.S.) and Kenny Villalobos (Valley Vista H.S.).

July 26th speaker - Captain Kevin Childe of the Fountain Valley Police Department

Captain Kevin Childe took time out of his very busy schedule to give us a good look at his baby, the Fountain Valley Police Department. Up to 1967 we contracted with the county for police services, but then everything changed. We created out own PD, one we were proud of then and one were still very proud of.

We started out with 65 officers and support personnel. Now we have 55 - with no drop in service to our community. The Captain gives the credit to technology, but more than that, to a management philosophy that implements that technology only after some time has allowed the bugs to be worked out of it.

Let me tell you a personal story about how the FVPD helped my family. My 89-year mom had just been required to leave her Assisted Living Community. Not their fault. She was heading into advanced Alzheimer's, that terrible time of delusions and paranoia and required a facility able to handle her condition. We asked her to stay with us until we could find the right one. Well, that arrangement lasted about 12 hours. She decided we were the enemy and that she should run away from home. She threw on a coat and off she went. Novices at this sort of thing, we didn't know how to restrain her, so we called the FVPD for help. For the next three hours officers remained with her, spoke with her, calmed her, and finally helped her return safely to our home.

The Captain is proud of the fact that technology has allowed him to keep service levels high, while doing it with fewer people. I am equally proud of the department, no matter what technology they use. Because it's got good people.

Recognizing that, the Captain believes his priority is to prepare them to become the next generation of management - to help them take over in the next 5 to 7 years.

Announcement - PARKS & REC. NON-PROFIT NIGHT

Jean Hardy, FVWC, 5th VP Ways & Means, Secretary elect, FV Rotary

FVWC & FV Rotary have signed up to co-host a booth at Non-Profit Night/Concerts in the Park on Thursday, July 21st, at Mile Square Park, North-East of the Rec. Center. We can distribute brochures, candy for the kids, and sell opportunity drawing tickets for gift baskets as money-makers. The booth will be open at 4 PM for decorating and at 5 PM to 8 PM for doing our PR thing. If you have anything you'ld like to donate for a couple of baskets, like wine, cheese & crackers (always big sellers), please let me know. To make things simple, we can share the profits, just as we're sharing the cost of the booth ($12.50 each).
